Tourism in Kainuu (Arctic Lakeland Finland) is built on people, places, and ideas that come together to create something larger than the sum of their parts. At Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, the Tourism RDI team works at the heart of this process, turning strategies into everyday actions and ensuring that development is always rooted in real needs. In addition to local and regional initiatives, the Tourism RDI team has extensive experience in working with national and EU-level funding. By combining practical know-how with funding expertise, we help turn ambitious ideas into concrete results that benefit the entire region.

The team’s work is practical and warm in spirit. One day might be spent mapping new routes through forests and lakes, another drafting articles or social media campaigns that highlight the region’s unique character. Meetings with entrepreneurs often bring fresh ideas to the table—whether it’s a new accommodation concept, an investment in sustainable practices, or a joint project that connects several businesses. Each encounter is an opportunity to strengthen the vitality of Kainuu’s tourism offering.

Behind these activities lies a clear vision. Tourism must be accessible, inclusive, and sustainable. Arctic experiences, nature trails open to all, and responsible practices are not just themes but guiding principles. They shape the way services are developed and ensure that visitors from near and far can enjoy the region in ways that respect both the environment and the community.

What makes this work possible is not only passion but also strong project management skills. The team is experienced in coordinating complex initiatives, balancing multiple stakeholders, and keeping projects on track from idea to implementation. They know how to transform strategies into concrete steps, how to manage budgets and timelines, and how to evaluate results so that every project contributes to long-term development. This expertise ensures that even ambitious goals—such as international marketing campaigns or cross-sector sustainability projects—are carried out with professionalism and impact.

Collaboration is central. The team supports companies in their own development projects but also brings them together in larger initiatives where shared goals create shared success. International marketing campaigns, training sessions, and product development workshops are all part of this collective journey. Even cross-sector cooperation plays a role, as seen in projects that link tourism with circular economy solutions.

While tourism strategies from Visit Finland, the Kainuu region, and local municipalities provide a framework, the daily work is firmly grounded in practice. It is about writing, negotiating, designing, and testing—about making sure that ideas become reality. In this way, the Tourism RDI team contributes not only to the growth of individual businesses but also to the international competitiveness of the entire region.

Tourism in Kainuu, better known as Arctic Lakeland Finland, is more than a service industry; it is a living story of landscapes, people, and shared ambition. By combining creativity with project management expertise, and by working closely with entrepreneurs and communities, the Tourism RDI team ensures that this story continues to evolve—sustainably, inclusively, and with a spirit of collaboration that makes the region stronger for the future.
